11 Ways To DeStress Your Experience With Mail Order Pharmacies

By Kitty K. Free

As a mail-order pharmacy service rep, I’ve learned a lot that I’d like to share. The following are some things I wish I could tell my patients, but am not always able to. I’ll spare you my complete feelings about the act of profiting, by charging people ridiculous amounts of money, for life saving medications.

Don’t get me wrong—there should be a fee, but, it should be affordable, like over the counter meds. People shouldn’t go broke, or die, because they can’t afford meds. There was a time, long ago, when medicines were created solely to help people, not to profit from them. In any case, here are some things to help you, have as easy a time as possible, dealing with your pharmacy:

1. No one cares about your medication more than you. If you’re expecting meds in the mail, but haven’t heard anything about it, call your pharmacy! I’ve encountered many patients that are waiting for medications for days, even weeks. Stay on top of it. You are your biggest advocate.

2. See about copay assistance programs. Check with the manufacturer of your medication, your pharmacy, your doctor, or look online, to find out if there are any copay assistance programs available for your medication. And don’t automatically assume you don’t qualify. Now, this one is something pharmacies push, because if it’s more affordable, you’re more likely to buy your meds. Also, always ask for generic if your doctor allows it.

3. Pay attention to your drug formulary. Drugs can change status from preferred to non-preferred, causing a huge increase in costs.

4. Some meds are only available by mail. Your local pharmacy, for any number of reasons, may not carry certain meds. Be sure to verify this with your insurance to avoid delays in your therapy.

5. Some meds are available at your local pharmacy, for a limited time, until your insurance increases your copay. They do this because it’s more cost effective for some drugs to be sent by mail-order, verses, being stored at a local pharmacy. This is no secret, but it’s something that’s not well understood by everyone. For example: you can go in May to fill your birth control at your local pharm for $20, but then try to refill in June, and it’s $50. That could be because you must start getting it by mail.

6. The customer service rep does not run the company. Often times, these overworked, underpaid reps, are also frustrated by company policies. The people responsible for making decisions about how your meds are handled, will never speak to you. So if you are frustrated with policies, or the handling of your medications, etc… ask to speak to a supervisor. If you have a complaint, WRITE THE COMPANY! Send a certified letter for confirmation of receipt. Email works too, but can be “accidently” deleted. I say do both. This, of course, can go for, any customer service situation. Also, let your insurance company, and your HR department, know about issues you’re having.

7. Verify your pharmacy’s refill policy. Some pharmacies call their patients, some don’t. If you’re taking a maintenance medication, stay on top of it! You are one of many, and can slip through the cracks. It’s not the pharmacy’s intention to have that happen, but they’re processing thousands of prescriptions a day, someone’s bound to get lost, and you don’t want it to be you.

8. Make sure you have refills left. Verify—by phone, not on line—the amount of refills you have and the dates that it’s valid. The life of a prescription is one year. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have a year’s worth of refills, but it does mean you have an expiration date, and if you’re past that date, then you need a new prescription.

9. Call at least a week before you need your meds. Just because the shipments may be overnighted, doesn’t mean you want to call Monday for Tuesday delivery. Your prescription needs to process amongst thousands of others. Processing sometimes includes, contacting your doctor’s office, verifying insurance, processing prior authorizations, and so on.

10. Check with your insurance or pharmacy about getting a 90 day supply. Keep in mind, some insurance companies will allow you a 90 day supply only after you’ve met a certain minimum supply. For instance; you may need to get three, thirty day supplies consecutively, before you can get a full 90 day supply.

11. If your med is administered at your doctor’s office, make sure they have it on hand before you go. Just because they made an appointment with you, doesn’t mean they have your drug. I can’t tell you the number of times that patients call, upset, after going all the way to their doctor’s, just to find out their drug wasn’t there. I’d like to yell at them, “Why didn’t you make sure they had the drug before you went!” Also, make sure your doctor isn’t using someone else’s drug on you, or using your drug on someone else. For example: If you and another patient both use Gamunex, and the doctor’s office stores the med for the both of you; the medication that has your name on it, should not be used for another patient, and medication with someone else’s name on it, should not be used for you. That is illegal.

TERM YOU SHOULD KNOW- Prior Authorization/Pre-certification/Coverage Review – there may be some other names, as they may vary by insurance. It’s basically a list of questions your insurance wants your doctor to answer to verify the necessity of a medication and/or procedure. For medications, in some cases, you just need one for the pharmacy to provide the medication. In other cases, say for injectables, you may need one for the pharmacy to provide it, and another for the doctor to administer it.

Protect Your Phone Number With Google Voice

Do you wish that you could easily block calls from telemarketers or ex boyfriends who don't know when to quit?

Do you have a gmail account?

If so, your problem is solved. You can set up a google voice account and your worries are over.

A google voice account gives you the option to choose a new telephone number to give out to anyone you please. All calls made to this new phone number can be routed to your cell phone, business phone or house phone and the caller will not know the difference.

You can also make calls using google voice by dialing your google voice number from your own phone and accessing your account.

Google voice also offers free voicemail. When a caller calls, you can opt to send them to voicemail. While they are leaving their message you can listen in and decide if you want to pick up the call or not. If you decide not to answer and they leave a message, their message will be transcribed for you and sent to you as a text message.

If you no longer wish to receive calls from a specific person, you can log in to your account online and block their number.

The only problem I have with using my google voice number is the fact that I don't have it memorized yet and when I meet people and I am out of business cards, I tend to give out my regular number so that I can keep in touch.

For My Savvy Sisters: Can you think of someone you WISH didn't have your number? Have you ever had to change your number because you were tired of someone calling?

Free and Discounted Drug Prescriptions

Once I was sick and had to go to the emergency room. I was given a prescription for antibiotics and when I went to fill it the prescription was more than $100. I couldn't afford it so I had to continue to deal with the sickness and eventually had to return to the emergency room. When I was there I argued with the doctor who then gave me another prescription. When I went to get it filled it was only $33!

I was livid. The doctors know that there are generic versions available but most won't tell you for some reason.

My Mom visited the doctor yesterday and he was such an awesome individual that he told her about all of the free and discounted drug prescription programs available. I summarized his list for you. Before you fill your prescription please call the pharmacist and always ask about the latest information on free and discounted drug prescription programs as the list changes from month to month.

A big, hearty THANK YOU to Bernard S. Chapnik, MD for this valuable information.

5 Things To Know Before You Book Your Next Cruise

By Brenda M. Hook

I will always remember my first cruise. It was in 2004 and it left out of Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes from where I live. The cruise destination was Bermuda. My travel companion was my then 8 year old son. I made a promise to him, on that trip that every year we would cruise to somewhere fabulous. Over the last 7 years, I have kept that promise and although I wouldn’t consider each destination “fabulous” we have seen the likes of Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Panama, and over 20 other ports outside of the United States.

My son is now 15, and I am starting my search to book our next cruise. I am not rich, and I do not have a lot of extra money after my bills are paid. We cruise on a budget, and it is easy for anyone to do the same. In some cases, I paid less than $600.00 total for both of us to cruise for 9 days. A deposit is required but final payment usually isn’t due until 3 months before your cruise departs. There are a few crucial things that you must keep in mind that can allow you to take a nice, but inexpensive family vacation.

Be flexible.

When the dates you want to travel are specific, you are less likely to get a good deal.

If you must fly, keep airfare in mind.

Several times, we have had to hop a plane to our cruise departure port, it is important to check airfare rates often and try to book your cruise and flight the same day. This will ensure that you do not have a cruise with no air arrangements or vice versa.

Keep an open mind about your destination.

It is also good to not be destination specific. When searching for cruise options, the less specific you are, the more options you will have, and the better chance you have of finding a good deal.

Stay away from holidays.

Cruising on holidays cost almost double the normal rate. Additionally, these cruises are always packed with kids. If being on a boat for 9 days with 600 kids is not your idea of a vacation, then be mindful of the time of year. Spring Break, Thanksgiving and Christmas time are the biggest attractions for families with school aged children.

Book off-season.

We usually cruise in the month of November. The rates are much cheaper in the winter months, and can be three times that much during the summer time.

Book really early, or really late.

Most cruise lines have an early bird booking, where you get a sizeable discount for booking at least 9 months in advance as opposed to booking closer to the cruising date. Likewise, you can also find great deals on last minute cruises as well.

Get a travel agent.

Although I always book direct from the cruise line, you may find a cheaper rate with a travel agent. They usually book out several rooms at a group rate and that rate is passed on to you. Always double check your quote with the cruise line. I was once quoted a price by a travel agent that was more than booking direct.

With these simple tips, you will soon find yourself on a fabulous and inexpensive vacation. Make sure you check the travel and passport guidelines with your cruise line in advance. Not all trips require a passport but it’s always wise to have a valid passport in case of emergencies.

Lower Your Cell Phone Bill Instantly

We all have them- Those bills that are on auto refill. Every month we are dishing out a wad of cash for cable, our cell phone bills or subscriptions to things that we feel we need.

The truth is, we don't NEED them, but we do deserve luxury because we put in the work to play. You can reduce your bills each month and I will tell you how.

I used to work for a pharmaceutical company. We produced pills that customers would buy from our infomercials. Once the customers signed up for the special 'buy one get one free' offer we would auto bill them each month at a much higher rate. I didn't work in the inbound sales department so I'm not sure if it was those sales people who misled the customers into thinking that introductory rate was the fixed rate, but I sure got an earful on a regular basis from customers who were shocked to find their bills had skyrocketed and automatically deducted from their accounts.

I worked in customer retention, which means that if a customer called in to cancel their account I had to do anything to get them not to. I received a commission from each customer who didn't cancel. These were called SAVES. I could offer them a ridiculously low rate, give them free products or even suspend their accounts. It was all at my discretion depending upon how insistent the customer was about canceling.

If you want to lower your cell phone bill or your cable bill or your subscription, all you have to do is:

1) Call up the company and ask to cancel.

2) When they give you a price reduction offer, refuse it.

3) Refuse it again.

4) Ask for the rock bottom rate and when they say 'This is it'- take it.

5) Call back the next day to cancel. A new representative will take your call and lower your rate again.

Companies will do anything to keep your money coming in. Take advantage of this. Get all of your bills lowered instantly.

Top 4 Ways Car Sellers Trick Women

If you're single and you do not have a lot of people around you to help get things done, you may consider buying a cash car from a private owner. There are a few of the way private sellers trick you into purchasing a problem.

1. They lie about recent repairs.
Have the car inspected by a reputable car repair shop. Have them detail what isn't working and provide you with a list of items that need to be fixed. If you are buying from a private individual who says that they had multiple repairs done on the car, ask them to list these repairs in writing and have them sign it so that if anything goes wrong with the car, you can get your money back.

2. They tell you everything works just fine.
Check all of the doors, windows and locks to be sure they are in working condition. Open the trunk to look inside. Open the hood to see if anything noticeable is missing. Touch the tires and look at the tread. The tread is the amount of rubber that is on the tires. The grooves on the tire should be deep. This is an indication that you have a good tire. If it is smooth your tired will need to be replaced soon.

Drive the car. Not just around the block. Drive it to the bank. Go get something to eat. Drive it for at least 15 minutes so that you can tell if the air conditioner really works or the car overheats suddenly.

3. They will say they own the car when they don't.
Ask for ID. Ask to see the ID of the owner so that you can have his name and address in case something happens. Be sure to notice if the name on the ID is the same name on the title.

4. They will give you a title that isn't real.
Check the title of the car. Have the owner go with you to the title agency. Some owners do not know that the title they have is rebuilt or has been updated. If this is the case, you will not be able to get your car registered and you will not be able to drive your car.

Basic Credit Repair Tips

The basic strategy to repairing your credit is as follows:
  1. Get a copy of your credit report.
  2. Analyze your report by making a list of all items you consider to be untrue or negative.
  3. For each item on your list, write down exactly why you believe the information is incorrect.
  4. Write a dispute letter to each of the credit bureaus.
  5. Send the letters to the credit bureaus. Be sure to send them registered or certified mail so that you can track each one.
  6. Keep a record of your efforts filed away so that you can retrieve it and add to it later. Record when you sent your letters and where you sent them to.
  7. Wait for the bureaus to investigate your claims.
  8. Record each of the responses after analyzing the results.
  9. Repeat.

Were the items corrected to your satisfaction?

Continue the above steps until you the dispute is settled to your satisfaction. There is no fee for a reinvestigation. If you don’t get the results you want, dispute the listing again.

You can do this. It will take patience but it will pay off.

Good luck!

For My Savvy Sisters: Have you taken the opportunity to review your credit history this year? Have you undertaken the task of repairing your own credit? How did things turn out?

Find Free Treasures With FreeCycle

I learned about FreeCycle when I was living in Houston. I was a nanny for a very savvy woman who gave me several tips about how to save money on your household needs. She showed me how to find a group in my area and register for it and then she showed me how to get the things I needed for FREE.

FreeCycle is a list of groups of people organized by neighborhood or city. When members of these groups want to give their homes an updated look, they often post their used household items on FreeCycle so that someone who needs it can come pick it up.

I gave away an Ann Taylor suit that I grew out of and I met a woman who gave me a jacket. When I had to move I gave away my bed and my coffee table on FreeCycle. None of it was damaged, I just didn't need it anymore.

Be careful when you meet anyone online though. Offer to meet them in a public place like a supermarket parking lot to make the exchange or receive your free item. If you are giving something big away, like a couch or a dresser, have someone you trust at your house with you so that you are safe.

Visit FreeCycle's website to find a group near you.
