How To Have Peace- The Yin Yang Factor

The Yin and Yang symbol teaches us that you can not define darkness without light. You can not define life without death. You can not define good without bad. There is a drop of darkness in light and there is a drop of light in darkness. These two polar opposites must exist to be able to bring richness and life to the other. To this effect, it is utterly important to recognize that you WILL have those days, months or seasons where things just don't seem to be working in your favor. You will also have periods where you stop and wonder, "Am I dreaming? Is my life this great?"

While I like to argue that EVERYTHING is a good thing, during those moments of sadness, you won't believe me. But, I want to teach you how to maintain peace during the darkest of moments.

How To Maintain Peace Through Any Circumstance

Understand that life is full of good days and bad. It is irrational to believe that you won't have days of sadness, loss or grief. Once you accept that these emotions are just as valuable to your life as bliss then you will begin to really live.

Life is a continuum of experiences that flow in like waves. The waves never stop rolling and neither will your experiences, both sad and blissful. The acceptance of these waves of emotions is the first step to living a more peaceful life.

Peace is attained when you feel confident that where you are in life and who you are in life is just fine. In essence, you'll think to yourself, "I'm feeling good about who I am right now."

You can feel good about who you are in every moment by understanding that nothing is permanent, everything changes after a time. Those moments of grief MUST give way to other emotions. Those moments of bliss MUST give way to other experiences. Life is a constant stream of soft, soothing waves and rough, angry ones. When you can understand and accept that the rough waves will be followed by the soothing ones, you can maintain peace during the angry ones.

I often wonder why when we're sad we feel like the feeling will last forever, but when we're happy we almost never give ourselves permission to enjoy it because we fear the feeling will go away. If we can consciously expect the good feelings to go away, causing us to disrupt the enjoyment of the moment that proves that we can consciously interrupt the sad feelings when they surface as well.

There is a famous fable that illustrates the main principle of the Yin Yang Factor. The story tells us that a King asked his noblemen to create a ring that will make him happy when he is sad and vice versa. The noblemen gathered and came back with a ring that was inscribed with the words, "This too, shall pass."

From then on, the King understood that nothing is permanent and even on his most glorious days when he felt unstoppable, at some point, his circumstances would change. Accepting this will help keep you from becoming overbearing when you are experiencing success and becoming overwhelmed when you are experiencing loss.

Nothing is permanent. Not your happiness, not your sadness, your success or your failures, your relationships, your jobs, your pain or even your life. Be willing to say goodbye to it all and let nothing define you.

In every given moment, "This too shall pass." Remember it. Believe it. Be transformed by this unshakeable truth.

From The Publisher: We're Murderers

I don't know how America slept last night. I know for a fact that I couldn't rest. To think that there was nothing we could do to stop our court system from murdering a man and label it 'punishment' makes me want to cry. I am crying. I weep for us all. How helpless are we? How unimportant were our pleas? All across the country men and women spoke out, begging for a delay in the execution of Troy Davis, a man who was convicted of killing an off duty policeman in 1989.

Yes, I grieve also for the family of the slain officer. Their loved one was taken from them in an act of violence and I do believe in justice, just not this way. The rumor mill alleges that there was not sufficient evidence to uphold the 1989 conviction yet, for some reason, the Supreme Court overturned the final appeal.

In the final four hours as we waited for the Supreme Court decision I asked myself- What kind of country are we? What kind of people govern us? Do the laws that were put in place to protect us really serve us in this modern day?

Our prisons are filled with men and women who are snatched away from their lives. Isn't that punishment enough not to be able to live, work, play and grow and then to be released and stigmatized for the rest of your lives? Wouldn't that have been punishment enough for Troy Davis? Who are we to play God? Who are we to decide who lives and dies?

I would expect this kind of behavior from rebel forces who did not understand the power of love and light, but not from the greatest country on earth. I guess we're unstoppable. I guess we have to answer to no one. I guess this is a sign that we are no different than those we label terrorists when we terrorize our nation too.

America, watch out. There is a universal principle in progress that is best described by the yin and yang symbol. Nothing is permanent- not our pain, not our struggles, not our weaknesses nor our failures. Everything in life has to balance out. There can not be constant power and domination because nothing in life is constant. Instead of believing that we are invincible disregarding the mercy that our Creator granted us, we must remember to remain humble even at the height of our greatest conquests because through all of our might, all of our glory, all of our successful ventures- this too, shall pass.

In Love,

5 Ways To Celebrate International Day of Peace

Today is International Day of Peace, a formal call to action created by The United Nations acting as a signal to engage in non violence and cease fire. My Savvy Sisters is celebrating this Day of Peace in our own distinct way.

Today is the day you make peace with yourself and your global sisterhood. Today is the day you are freed from the chains of your ego. Today is the day you find your peace of mind. To celebrate your inner peace you should:

1) Forgive yourself for things you may have said or done that have caused harm to others.

2) Forgive the last person that hurt you. Really forgive them by sending them your personal well wishes, an e-card, or offering a prayer for them asking for their extended blessings.

3) Forgive yourself for not making the right choices at the right moments. It's okay. You will not be punished forever for a mistake.

4) Understand that happiness is not attached to the attainment of your goals. Happiness is a choice when you can celebrate who you are and where you are in this very moment without the added guilt or pressure to do or be more.

5) Turn off the TV today. Recount the good times you've had in your life. Relive those moments where the laughter filled the room like a giant cloud and you felt safe and warm and loved. What were the last three moments in your life when you felt completely at peace? Relive them all day long. Relish the memories.

Enjoy your Day of Peace.

EDITORIAL: Occupy Wall Street Protest

By Christina Fermin

Politics & Society Columnist

Saturday September 17, 2011 was the kick off to the Occupy Wallstreet peaceful Arab Spring style protest. The goal is to get 20,000 people to flood the public spaces of lower Manhattan, setup a tent community and occupy the area for the next few months. The event has been organized by NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage, answering Adbusters call for the occupation in July. According to their website they claim they are “the 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.” Similar occupations are suppose to begin October 6, 2011 in Washington D.C.’s Freedom Plaza for peace, social, economic and environmental justice.

The group aims to get an uprising such as we saw in Egypt, Greece, Spain and Iceland, which began in December 2010 in response to the global economic conditions, human rights abuses, political corruption and oppressive regimes. They address the core issues in our society: profit, through means of the Capitalist system of haves and have nots, as well as the Corporations who control the wealth and means of production and inherently the political system that governs. Occupy Wallstreet's goal is to regain control of our freedoms which have in the last century withered away. Their definition of freedom is “the right to communicate, to live, to be, to go, to love, to do what you will without the impositions of others.”

In spirit I am there with the protesters as I would love to be there protesting. I fully support this protest and what they are trying to accomplish, this outrage, this public anger, this protest is the materializing frustration of the masses that has been echoed in the internet and whispered in the halls for the past few years. People are getting tired of all the bullshit, the lies, the corruption, the void that capitalism cannot fill. People are beginning to realize there is something seriously wrong with our society. When money and profit are worth more than the life of a human being, there is something wrong.

I have been a strong proponent for change this past year. I write about it, I talk about it, I read about it. I have written about the paradigm shift that is coming, the shift that has been mentioned in the prophecies of our ancestors. The time has come when we must come together as a people and address the core issues in our society and try to come up with innovative, creative solutions to fix what is so seriously wrong with our world. This protest will begin the winds of change, this will get the creative juices flowing, this is the time to begin talking with anyone and everyone you know and start thinking of better ways to live.

We control the future, we control our lives. It is time we take a step back, catch our breaths and look to what really matters in life. When you die all you have is the experiences you chose, nothing more, nothing less. We the people are the majority, and without us the upper echelon would have nothing. It is time we took responsibility and began co-creating the future we want. A future where everyone is equal, peace, love and respect are the way. I not only support the protest, I encourage all of you to get involved by writing about it, talking about it, supporting the protesters, taking part in a protest and when the call comes, be ready to answer it. This is our time.

Peace & Love,

Christina
