Virginia Elects First Black Supreme Court Justice


54-year-old Justice Cleo Powell has joined the Supreme Court becoming the first African American female Supreme Court justice in the state of Virginia.

After serving more than 2 years on the Virginia Court of Appeals and Working under the direction of Hunton & Williams law firm in Richmond, Virginia, Powell specialized in labor and employment law.

Her achievement sets a precedence that many others will seek to follow including Illinois Justice Joy Cunningham who has announced her bid for the Illinois Supreme Court election to be held in March 2012.
