SUCCESS: The Issa Rae Way

By Te-Erika Patterson

Success for Issa Rae the creator of the web based series Awkward Black Girl, didn't happen as a stroke of luck. She has now partnered with famed Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes to present a new series, I Hate LA Dudes on ABC.

What led to Issa Rae's success? The answer is simple- she did the work.

Now living in LA and running The Artists Might, my indie artist resource blog, I have come across so many artists who are looking for their big break. They go to bed at night praying that someone will notice their good looks and talent. They sigh in frustration as the partnership they hoped for falls through. They are missing the one thing that sets them apart from those who make it and those who do.

In order to be a success in anything you must BE the success that you see. Begin right now.

If you want to be a teacher go and teach.
If you say you are a television writer, write a script and produce it.

You can not wait for someone to believe in you when you have nothing for them to believe in. CREATE YOUR OWN opportunity by DOING the thing that you believe you are gifted to do RIGHT NOW. Don't wait to get paid. Don't wait for the fancy equipment. Look around you and transform the tools you have into the tools you need to create the life you want.

This is how Issa Rae created her success. She didn't sit around feeling sad about her life, wishing for a chance; she did the work. She created Awkward Black Girl and had something to hold up for the world to see.

CREATE YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITY by doing what you love right now with what you have. Do it and keep doing it, improving along the way. The rest will fall into place.

Arizona Teens Punished By Holding Hands

Two students who were caught fighting in an East Valley highschool were asked to choose their punishment. They could be suspended for 9 days each or sit together holding hands throughout the entire day in front of their peers. The two boys chose to hold hands.

This method of punishment is drawing criticism from news watchers across America as the snapshot of the two has become an internet sensation. The teens, who were ridiculed for the entire day, have not made any claims of harassment or bullying yet many believe this punishment is a direct attack on gays.

What do you think? Was their punishment the best way to handle the situation?

WARNING: PMS Now Being Treated By Pretty Prozac Pills

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the guidebook for diagnosing mental disorders. The fifth edition of the list of symptoms that allow doctors to label patients as mentally ill is now updated and will be released this month. According to the PMS Comfort Blog, the DSM V may allow symptoms associated with PMS to be included in the main section as an official mental disorder called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

Since the beginning of time, women have dealt with the many emotional surges associated with their menstrual cycles and now doctors have created a remedy that they call SaraFem. SaraFem is a drug that can be issued to women who experience the normal symptoms of a woman's body cycle. The scary part is, according to the Katherine McCormick, the CEO of Australia based Utopia Research Institute, SaraFem is another form of the anti-anxiety drug Prozac, repackaged to appeal to women, a move Katherine calls "crazy" in itself.

Do not fall for this. You are a woman, you are supposed to experience the emotions of life. You are not mentally ill because you have the proper reproductive organs to reproduce. Do not accept this diagnosis which can not be measured in any scientific way and therefore can be handed out at the psychologist's whim in an effort to quell any complaints. Your symptoms will appear to disappear after taking this drug but that will be because you will be too high on the drug to experience them.

My Savvy Sisters don't take drugs to manage our emotions. We live them. We accept them. We handle our issues internally. ~Te-Erika Patterson

‘Salary’ Tops Poll of What US Women Want to Change Most About Their Partner

Curious to see if women would try and change their partner in some way, if given the chance, one of the leading coupon code websites in the US has conducted a survey to discover what personality traits in their partner, if any, and other things they would most like to change.

CouponCodes4u.com surveyed 2,073 American women to discover their thoughts on the matter. The survey, formed part of research into relationships and whether women would be happier to change their partner than men.

All respondents that took part in the study were in a relationship and had been with their partner for at least 6 months. All respondents were asked whether or not there were things about their partner that they wanted to change in any way, to which 65% admitted that there were. Just 18% said they wouldn’t want to change their partner in any way, while the remaining respondents were unsure. Respondents who admitted they would like to change something about their partner were then asked to list the attributes that they would change immediately, given the chance, and could select all that applied from a list of possible answers.

The top ten attributes that women would most like to change about their partner if given the chance were as follows:

1) Salary 71%
2) Attitude 69%
3) Cleanliness 54%
4) Physical appearance 46%
5) Manners 43%
6) Skills in bed 38%
7) Friends 35%
8) Family 31%
9) Fashion sense 28%
10) Hobbies 25%

Furthermore, when asked if they had ever almost broken up with their current partner over what they deemed to be “flaws”, 45% of respondents said that they had. When asked if they’d attempted to change anything about their partner in the past, 36% said that they had, with ‘fashion sense’ being the top trait that they’d attempted to change.

Saudi Arabia Women Protest Ban on Driving June 17th

By Te-Erika Patterson

On June 17th courageous women in Saudi Arabia will take to the streets in protest of Saudi Arabia's longstanding ban against women driving. Manal al-Sharif, the organizer behind the Women2Drive protest which began last year after she posted a youtube video of her driving, is now the subject of violent threats against her life.

After posting this video that shows her driving, Manal has been honored by numerous organizations for her bravery in a country that punishes women with public lashing for disobeying cultural rules like driving and not covering their bodies.

According to a report that ran in Women's E News, Manal has stated that she has been taught since she was a child that as a girl she was sinful to expose. She defied that definition last year by organizing a protest that received international attention as 100 men and women in support of Manal's stance on women's liberation in Saudi Arabia got behind the wheel of cars. Two women were reportedly stopped by police and one of them was sentenced to a public lashing which was never carried out because she went into hiding.

My Savvy Sisters stands behind Manal al-Sharif and her efforts to quell the attack on women's freedom and personal development in Saudi Arabia. To show your support please visit the Women2Drive facebook page and follow this developing movement.

President Obama Publicly Supports Gay Marriage

In an epic moment this Wednesday, May 9th, President Barack Obama publicly voiced his support of equal marriages for gay couples. This is the end of an era, bringing the commonality of the gay lifestyle into public view, as accepted and reinforced by the President of the United States.

Although this statement was directed toward support of equal legal rights for homosexual couples, the President's support will have lasting effects that supersede legal benefits that the President believes should be granted to ALL couples who seek legal acknowledgement from the United States. This bold move by the President is ushering in the era where there is no more shame in homosexuality.

Children will no longer grow up in confusion and self hatred because they understand that their natural sexual preference is not wrong. Abuse rates among homosexual couples will decrease because the stress of keeping their love a secret will be non existent.

Best of all, the divorce industry will be BOOMING and the courtroom drama Divorce Court will become one of the most interesting shows on television.

Thank you, President Obama for ushering this society into a new state of mind with one statement. ~Te-Erika Patterson

Dreams Come True: I Want To Be Barbie

A 21-year-old model from the Ukraine has finally accomplished her childhood dream; she wanted to be a real life Barbie doll. Valeria Lukyanova's photos are being shared across the internet along with the typical pejorative statements from people saying it's a shame that she did this to herself. With the use of surgery, Valeria has become the epitome of the beauty of Barbie, the long standing standard of beauty for women.

I have no problem with what she's done. She had a dream and she made it come true. Cheers to her for being bold enough to take action and realize her dream.

Educated Immigrants Moving Back Home For Job Opportunities

In growing numbers, experts say, highly educated children of immigrants to the United States are uprooting themselves and moving to their ancestral countries. They are embracing homelands that their parents once spurned but that are now economic powers.

Enterprising Americans have always sought opportunities abroad. But this new wave underscores the evolving nature of global migration, and the challenges to American economic supremacy and competitiveness.

In interviews, many of these Americans said they did not know how long they would live abroad; some said it was possible that they would remain expatriates for many years, if not for the rest of their lives.

Their decisions to leave have, in many cases, troubled their immigrant parents. Yet most said they had been pushed by the dismal hiring climate in the United States or pulled by prospects abroad.

New Arizona Law: Pregnancy Begins 2 Weeks Before Conception

In Arizona, women are now legally pregnant two weeks before conception, according to a new law, the Orwellianly-named, “Women’s Health and Safety Act,” signed yesterday by Republican Governor Jan Brewer. The scientifically, medically, ethically, and intellectually dishonest legislation is designed to reduce the amount of time a woman is allowed to have a legal abortion, and is one of the most draconian bills to become law in America.

The bill was sponsored by extremist Arizona State Rep. Kimberly Yee, (image, right) who last month penned an op-ed titled, “No drug test, no welfare.”

“Planned Parenthood of Arizona lobbyist Michelle Steinberg called the law the country’s ‘most extreme piece of anti-abortion legislation’.”

How To Talk To Your Child About Trayvon Martin's Death

After the tragic slaying of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida last month, the neighborhood watchmen who pulled the trigger, 28-year-old George Zimmerman is still not in police custody. This incident prompting marches, demonstrations, walk-outs and protests from angry people across the country who believe Zimmerman should have been arrested for shooting an unarmed teenager walking home from the store.

Millions across the country have donned hoodies, the same type of head covering Martin was wearing the night of his murder, to show their support of Trayvon Martin's parents as they plead with the Sanford police department to make an arrest as an act of justice for the murder of their son. This tragedy is directly related to a racist attitude due to a racial slur Zimmerman made during a 911 call where he reported that a suspicious man was walking down the street who he later confronted and shot dead.

As adults we can't ignore what happened simply because this incident is becoming a nationwide outcry. What brings this issue close to home is more than a look at the state of racist attitudes in this country, this incident yields way to a sense of fear and grief for all parents. Our children are hearing about this incident at school, they are watching our reactions and will internalize what this means to them and how they view and interact with the world.

Regardless of how you feel about it or how it stirs up negative emotions and memories in your own life, it is wholly important to plant seeds of peace into the lives of our children by discussing this incident honestly using it as a life lesson to teach about trust, safety and the warped mentality of racism.

Here's how-

  1. Ask your child what he knows about the issue. Be sure to ask in a flat, non emotional manner that doesn't extend your personal opinions or prejudices.
  2. Gauge how he feels about it by how he recounts what he has heard. It is common for children to feel scared or angry after hearing about the death of a child.
  3. Ask him if he has any questions about the issue.
  4. Gauge how he feels about the issue by listening to his tone and watching his body language. You know your child's verbal cues. If your child is indifferent, he may feel that this situation does not affect him. If your child is indifferent, don't push the issue with him. Skip to #6
  5. Answer any questions with facts that do not perpetuate the problem. Using racial slurs and curse words will infect your child with your own prejudices and this is unfair to them as they learn to interact with the world. Yes, you may be angry but your child does not have to be.
  6. Remind your child that not every person in the world behaves the way George Zimmerman did.
  7. Make an action plan with your child that dictates what he should do if he is alone and he feels that someone is following him.
  8. Talk to your child about the root of racism. Explain that racist people do not like themselves and need to criticize and condemn another group of people so that they will feel better about themselves. Explain that generalizations about any race or group of people is ignorant because no two people are the same.
  9. Tell your child that they don't need anyone's acceptance or approval in this world in order to know that they are loved, capable of achieving their dreams and purposed here.
  10. Tell your child you love him and there's nothing he could ever do to change that. Remind him that if he ever wants to talk about this incident or anything else, you are there to listen. Give a quick hug or a pat on the back and tell him to go read a book.

You've done your part and all that is left for you to do is to continue to be an example of how to live and interact in this world. Your child is watching.

Same-Sex Couple Conceives Quadruplets, Deliver within Weeks of Each Other

FORT MYERS, Fla., March 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine having two sets of twins born within two weeks of each other? That's exactly what mothers and same-sex couple Laura Cavin and Sheri Green experienced as they each conceived twins from the same set of eggs and anonymous donor sperm through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

All four children – Brianna, Derrick, Anthony and Cason – were conceived on the same day and technically are quadruplets, even though the two sets of children were born two weeks apart.

The road to parenthood for these two "super moms" has been filled with both overwhelming joy and, unfortunately, indescribable sorrow. Both members of this loving couple always knew they wanted to become mothers. But like other lesbian couples, the native Floridians also understood they would need medical intervention to achieve this dream.

They contacted Dr. Craig Sweet, a reproductive endocrinologist and medical director of Specialists in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery in Fort Myers, Florida. At the time, Sheri was almost 35 while Laura was 24. They decided Sheri, who wanted biological children, would provide her eggs and Laura, who wanted to experience pregnancy, would carry the child. Though Laura conceived identical twins from the transfer of a single embryo that split, they lost the boys, named Aiden and Branden, at 24 weeks gestation because of the extremely rare condition of twin-to-twin transfusion, where one twin was not getting enough blood while the other was getting too much.

Despite the pain of their tremendous loss, Laura and Sheri were determined not to give up. They went back to Dr. Sweet to try another time. Again, Sheri produced an abundance of eggs and high quality embryos. After much discussion and trepidation, a decision was made to transfer two embryos into each woman. Dr. Sweet commented, "The chance that all four transferred embryos would implant and grow was less than 2%, so we were all amazed when the improbable occurred."

The first five months of both pregnancies went well, but at 31 weeks, Laura delivered Briana and Derek on May 9 after her placenta partially ruptured. Meanwhile, Sheri started going into labor and had Anthony and Cason on May 23, 2011.

As Mother's Day and the babies' birthdays approach, Laura and Sheri can look back at all they have endured and smile. Says Sheri, "We have become better mothers because we know what it is like to lose children. We would have given anything to hear Aidan and Brendan scream, so listening to four babies cry at once does not bother us. But our journey also took us to our four beautiful babies. Reproductive medicine made our dreams possible."

Sheri and Laura consider themselves mothers of four children, not of two each. From a gestational perspective, all four children were conceived on the same day. In Florida, however, they only are legally considered the mothers of the children they bore, so they are working with a family lawyer for each mother to adopt the other two. Said Dr. Sweet: "They are a family connected through genetics, reproductive medicine and the love these two women share with each other – an amazing modern family."

Female Episcopal Priests Balance on Schism's Edge

By Alexandra Poolos
WeNews correspondent

As the Episcopal Church's first female presiding bishop faces pressure on same-sex unions, female priests say the schism threat places intensified scrutiny on their own leadership.

(WOMENSENEWS)--The current rift between the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church, its U.S. body, leaves female priests at a turning point, says the Rev. Margaret Rose, head of the women's ministries at the Episcopal Church.

"We are either headed for annihilation or a conversation that is more healing if we can find a way for women and men to work together," she said in an interview last week.

After a heated five-day meeting in Tanzania that ended on Monday, the global Anglican Communion delivered an ultimatum to the Episcopal Church.

Leaders of Anglican provinces around the world told the Episcopal Church to bar gay men and lesbians from becoming bishops and halt official blessings of same-sex unions if it wants to remain part of the Anglican Communion, a world-wide affiliation of Anglican churches. A decision must be made by Sept. 30.

With the outspoken Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori at the helm, the U.S. branch of the church is not expected to budge.

Schori released a statement just after the meeting that said the struggle for equality for gay men and lesbians would eventually prevail, drawing an analogy with the end of slavery.

Many Protestant churches, including the Episcopal Church, ordain women, but the Southern Baptist Church does not, nor do the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox denominations.

'More Conservative Pressure'
"There is more conservative pressure," said Rose, who is based in New York. "But we're seeing that the way Schori is responding is a model for us: her insistence in the belief that all people should be at the table and that the dialogue should continue."

The crisis comes at a still vulnerable time for female leaders in the Episcopal Church, where women's overall numbers have been rising rapidly but where fewer than 10 percent of rectors--priests that oversee parishes--are female, according to a 2003 study on pastoral leadership sponsored by the Duke University Divinity School.

Rose says many female priests are on edge about what's going to happen to the church but many agree with Schori, who, since taking her office and through the current divide, has expressed confidence that the church will not split and that only a handful of churches express dissatisfaction with the church's overall mission.

The Episcopal Church has been under pressure from traditionalists at home and abroad since the 2003 consecration of the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.

Schori, 52, became the first female presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church since it began ordaining women 30 years ago after she was elected in June 2006 and took over the post in November.

While criticism of Schori is now focused on her support of an openly gay bishop and church blessings for same-sex couples, some think that Schori herself is part of the uproar.

'Delayed Response'
"This is a delayed response to the election of women," said Richard Valantasis, director of Anglican studies at Emory University in Atlanta, explaining that the decision to ordain women still rankles. "That is where the real global resistance is."

Rose agrees.

"The issue at its base is a gender issue," Rose said. "Part of the conversation that has not happened has to do with sexuality in general, which has to do with the nature of marriage as it is seen and lived out across the globe. It has to do with sexuality as it relates to men and women together. It has to do with inclusion and exclusion of the body. It certainly has to do with women's leadership."

The Rev. Astrid Storm, a 31-year-old vicar of St. Nicholas-On-The-Hudson, a small Episcopal parish in New York, speaks and writes in online journals about sexuality and often counsels women on issues related to reproduction.

"I think that women can raise awareness about political issues, like gay marriage," Storm said in an interview in a Manhattan coffee shop before the Tanzania meeting.

Although she is pro-choice, Storm says her pastoral duty is to listen to women struggling with sexuality and childbearing decisions. "It's hurtful when we don't talk about these issues. It's hurtful that they can't bring to church a part of their lives," she said. "I've had women admit to me that they've had abortions, and there's a lot of pain around that."

But institutional tensions within the church make Storm worry that her progressive practices would put her under new scrutiny.

Poverty Focus Advised
"I've had people say if I talk too openly about pre-marital sex, the fewer jobs I'll be able to get because it's so provocative," Storm said. One church leader, she said, has recommended she focus on less controversial issues, such as poverty.

While female priests such as Schori, Rose and Storm have publicly embraced progressive positions, many others have not. The Rev. Carol Anderson, rector of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, Calif., for instance, has fought for female priesthood since the 1970s, but has publicly expressed disinterest in using her pulpit for women's causes.

Since she became pastor in the late 1980s, attendance at Sunday services has nearly doubled to 3,000 and she has said that her example proves that women can get ahead in the priesthood.

Storm, for her part, says she knows that political and social activism could be a career risk.

But she says being a modern female priest means bringing spirituality down to earth and she is sure that plenty of congregants appreciate her efforts.

"A lot of people are very affirmative of what we're doing," she says. "People come in and say 'when I saw you there, I knew there was a place for me.'"

Ad Campaign Highlights Rise in Religious Skepticism Among African Americans

Amherst, New York – January 31, 2012 – African Americans for Humanism (AAH), a program of the Council for Secular Humanism that supports nonreligious African Americans, has launched a national multimedia advertising campaign showcasing religious skepticism in the African American community. Coinciding with Black History Month, the campaign features prominent African American humanists from history along with contemporary activists and organizers.

Ads began appearing January 30 and January 31 in New York City; Washington, DC; Los Angeles; Chicago; Atlanta; and Durham, North Carolina. On February 6, the campaign will be launched in Dallas. Advertisements will be placed on roadside billboards and in public transit sites. The Stiefel Freethought Foundation provided substantial creative and financial support for the campaign.

African Americans may be the most religious minority in the United States, but many feel that the churches don’t speak for them. AAH hopes that the campaign will bring attention to the presence of and increase in religious skepticism within the black community, encourage those who have doubts about religion to share their concerns and join other freethinkers in their local communities, and educate many about the history of black freethought.

All of the ads display the same message: “Doubts about religion? You’re one of many.” On the ads, images of writer-anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, poet-activist Langston Hughes, and social reformer-publisher Frederick Douglass are paired with contemporary freethinkers. Representing their respective hometowns are activists leading the way for African American nonbelievers, including Mark D. Hatcher of the Secular Students at Howard University, Mandisa L. Thomas of of Black Nonbelievers, Inc. (Atlanta), Kimberly Veal of Black Nonbelievers of Chicago, Jamila Bey of African Americans for Humanism–Washington, DC, Veronique Matthews of the Triangle Freethought Society, Leighann Lord of the Center for Inquiry–Harlem, Alix Jules of the Dallas–Ft. Worth Coalition of Reason, and Sikivu Hutchinson of Black Skeptics Los Angeles.

“African Americans who question religion often feel rejected by religious family and friends, and by the greater black community,” said Debbie Goddard, director of AAH. “But there is a rich heritage of religious skepticism and humanism in black history. By featuring the historical faces as well as the modern in our ad campaign, we show people that questioning religion is not new and that there are many of us here.”

Largest Women's Health Study Seeks 100,000 Nurses

Nurses' Health Study recruits "next generation"

BOSTON, Feb. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From the dangers of tobacco and trans fats to the benefits of physical activity and whole grains, much of what we know about health today is thanks to the Nurses' Health Study.

Researchers are recruiting 100,000 nurses and nursing students to join the long-running Nurses' Health Study and expand its landmark research on women's health.

Female RNs, LPNs, and nursing students between the ages of 20 and 46 who live in the U.S. or Canada are eligible to join the study. More than 25,000 have signed up already, and recruitment will stay open until the goal of 100,000 participants is reached.

Researchers hope to engage a highly diverse group of women in the "next generation" of the study. For the first time, nursing students are eligible to enroll.

In order to make participation as convenient as possible for busy women, participants can join online and complete the study's surveys through a secure website, http://www.nhs3.org/.

More than 250,000 nurses have participated in the study since the 1970s. By completing confidential lifestyle surveys, they have helped advance medical knowledge about nutrition, exercise, cancer, heart disease, and many other conditions.

"Nurses were originally recruited for their expertise in accurately reporting health data," explains Dr. Walter Willett, the study's lead researcher and Chair of the Nutrition Department at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass. "Their involvement has been invaluable, and their dedication is remarkable—an astounding 90% of them are still enrolled, decades later! The new group, NHS3, will allow us understand how today's lifestyle and environment affect a woman's health in the future."

Nurses enrolled in the earlier studies are encouraging their daughters and younger colleagues to join. "My mom started filling out surveys when the study began," one nurse recently commented on the NHS3 Facebook page (www.facebook.com/NHS3.org). "I am so proud to be part of this study and see what it has done."

Haiti Could Receive First Cruise Ship in a Quarter of a Century

Haiti's Minister of the Interior welcomes potential initiative to bring Cruise with a Cause, which combines tourism and volunteer work. Port-Au-Prince is getting ready for the historic visit.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A cruise ship may soon call at Port-Au-Prince, the first such visit in Haiti after a quarter of a century, a milestone that Minister of the Interior Thierry Mayard-Paul welcomed Friday at a gathering in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with the organizers of the cruise that combines tourism with volunteer work, seeing this as another instance of sustainable development for the Caribbean nation's economy, "breathing new life" into the tourism sector.

"Haiti is at a turning point as a nation," Mr. Mayard-Paul said at the retreat of Praisefest Ministries, which throughout the year organizes "Cruise with a Cause," a series of Mission Cruises transporting volunteer workers to various places that are in need of support. Praisefest Ministries is looking into taking their experience to Haiti via a 4,000 person Cruise with a Cause in 2013. The passengers on this cruise would participate in projects that include building homes, repairing schools, and installing new water purification systems throughout Port-au-Prince.

"When you sail into Port-au-Prince, my friends, you will be making history," the minister said. "Yours will be the first cruise ship to visit our capital in a quarter of a century: This will be a milestone to remember, so let me thank you now for breathing new life into our tourism sector."

The Government of Haiti has made this project a priority and is diligently working to evaluate and prepare the port in the capital city of Port-au-Prince for the cruise ship's arrival, said Mr. Mayard-Paul, one of the chief architects of President Michel Martelly's policy for job-creation and economic progress through local initiatives and decentralized cooperation.

Praisefest Ministries, the non-profit group that organizes Cruises with a Cause, include pastors and church representatives that give the group access to millions of homes and over 60,000 churches, with members willing to get involved with work in Haiti and the potential that they may return to the Caribbean nation in future cruises and visits.

"The goal here is to get these organizations to adopt the communities they serve in. They will continue to resource and help develop these communities in the years ahead," stated Dr. Matthew Dunaway of Praisefest Cruise with a Cause.

Tourism, one of the strongest and growing industries in the Caribbean, is a key to this plan's success in a country naturally endowed with paradisaical beaches and a people renowned for their hospitality. Dr. Dunaway recognizes the potential tourism has in Haiti's economic development, "We will continue to bring these efforts to Haiti setting the stage for tourism in the future to bring income."

"Haitian men and women are not looking for a hand out, but for a hand up… and this is what you will be bringing to Haiti, a powerful and loving hand up," Mr. Mayard-Paul told the Praisefest Ministries gathering.

During his visit to Alabama, Mr. Mayard-Paul with over 100 representatives from dozens of churches in the United States to discuss the potential and the opportunity that the arrival of the cruise ship would represent to his country.

He is also highlighting the benefit that this kind of organization provides to countries such as his own that are looking to change their economy from sustaining to sustainable. Mr. Mayard-Paul said the administration's plan for Haiti's development is based on laying out the framework for the country's economy to take off on its own, as it progresses in its reconstruction efforts after the January 2010 earthquake.

He invoked the proverb that says, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Give a man a fishing pole and teach him to fish, and he can feed himself and others for a lifetime."

That was the difference, Mr. Mayard-Paul said, between the cooperation-based initiative of Cruise with a Cause by Praisefest Ministries and that of other agencies or non-governmental organizations, that "do their work and then they leave."

"What you are doing is more powerful... It is people to people, and what you bring to Haiti will endure," he said, addressing the Praisefest Ministries' leaders and members.

President Obama's Budget Outlines Continued Commitment to Hunger

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Bread for the World is pleased that President Obama's fiscal year 2013 budget proposal presents a fairly balanced approach to deficit reduction. The budget also protects important programs for hungry and poor people, creates jobs, and promotes economic mobility.

"This is a strong indication of the president's priorities as Congress begins consideration of the budget resolution," said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. "Now, more than ever, we must ensure funding for those programs proven to alleviate hunger and help poor people move out of poverty. We praise the president's commitment to programs that help vulnerable people gain access to vital resources to help make ends meet."

The White House's proposed budget makes permanent the current Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit benefit levels, which are set to expire at the end of 2012. The budget also restores the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) benefit cuts, funds the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) at $7 billion, and includes $2.5 million for Hunger Free Communities.

"At a time when so many families in America are facing unemployment or reduced work hours, these tax credits and nutrition programs are more important than ever," said Beckmann.

The president has demonstrated his commitment to reducing hunger and poverty overseas by proposing sustained funding for critical programs that have proven to be successful. In particular, the president's budget included continued funding to help small farmers in developing countries improve and expand local agriculture; address preventable maternal and child malnutrition, especially in the 1,000-day window between pregnancy and age 2, which has measurable impact on the productivity of developing countries; and continuing funding for important operating expenses that ensure U.S. foreign assistance is used effectively.

"We must address our deficits, but we cannot sacrifice our commitment to hunger and poverty," said Beckmann. "This is not a partisan issue; it is a moral one. In the upcoming budget decisions, Congress must form a circle of protection around programs for hungry and poor people."
